The Harman Family

I was told by Jim Harmon, a direct descendant of Heinrich Adam Harmon that the family came originally from a castle in the Southwest corner of Baden/Wurttemburg located on a hillock that (depending on how the river flowed each year), was sometimes in Germany and sometimes in Switzerland. Johanne Michael Herrmann had fled Moravia in present Czechoslovakia, persecuted for religious beliefs. In Germany, the surrounding villages have many Hermann/Hermanns in them that have lived there for centuries. A civil war occurred in this region sometime between 1650 and 1700 in which the family castle was burned. After the fire, Johann Michael Herrmann gathered all his remaining resources to have each of his seven sons trained as Moravian ministers. He then sent them on the "Charlotte" in 1726 where they intially landed in Pennsylvania and eventually spread to seven eastern seaport cities to evangelize and spread their faith. On this "side of the pond" some of the sons stuck to the plan, but others got new ideas. Some descendants joined up with Joseph Smith and went to Utah, others went south and became predominantly Southern Baptist, others were staunch New England Presbyterians and there were some who fell away altogether from organized religion, just like in all families.

In 1750, the "Phoenix" sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia arriving 28 October, with Captain John Mason at the helm. The passenger list for the ship shows the family of Johann Georg Herrmann, 32, Christina (Haug), Elisabetha, 5 and Philip Jacob, 3. The place of origin of the family is Grünwettersbach, Alsace-Lorraine. Also onboard is "Henirich Herman" (sic) who may be also know as Heinrich Adam or Adam Harmon, the son of Johanne Michael Herrmann and Kundigunda Regis of Wurtemberg, Germany. It is know that the two men visited each other over the years, but their exact relationship is not proved. See Adam's charts here

"In 1795, John and Philip went to Montgomery County, Kentucky, near Mount Sterling. Some years later Jacob and Mathias went to Kentucky, and Daniel went to Virginia. Tradition in the family is that Daniel Harman was a great slave trader; and after buying five or six slaves, while camping by a lake, one of the negroes struck him in the head with an axe and killed him. John, son of Philip, married Bethany Brinson in 1798. They had eleven children: Philip, Mary, Elizabeth, George, Anna, John, Michael, Rachel, Mariah, Thomas and Julia." Information provided by Donald W. Read

"In Rowan County, N.C., records, we find that Philip Harman appears as follows: 1791, Philip Harman appointed road overseer; 1796, he received a deed from Daniel Harman; 1801, he executed several deeds; 1825, executed deed to Daniel Harman; 1810, Philip Harman received a deed in Shenandoah County, Virginia."

"The above record was given us by John F. Harman, Louisville, Illinois." *
