Deborah Laurens (Lawrence)

[1] Lt. Michael Smith, b. England, came to NJ betw. 1640-48, along with Capt. John Berry, Major William Sanford and the Kingslands from Barbadoes W.I. Michael Smith a merchant and planter, owned much land in North Bergen. In 1683 became first High Sheriff of Bergen County. He was, at one time a merchant, and afterward a planter with an extensive estate in Bergen County, near Overpeck's Creek, adjoining a plantation belonging to his father-in-law. On 22 June 1677, he was appointed a Lieutenant in the Bergen Foot Company, in which John Berry was Captain. In 1683, Michael Smith became the first High Sheriff of Bergen County under the Twenty-four Proprietors. He died sometime prior to 2 August 1685 when his widow, Francina Berry Smith, married Thomas (Laurens) Lawrence. On 9 June 1686 his widow, wife of Captain Thomas Lawrence, was granted administration of Michael Smith's estate.

[2] Francina Berry is the daughter of Major John Berry and his wife, Francina Pitman. In 1677 John Berry and Michael Smith acquired, by an Indian deed, land on Hackensack, Saddle and Tantaqua rivers, and two years later, in another Indian deed, acquired another tract of land, "called Aschatking" on Tantaqua Creek. John Berry one of the largest landowners in Bergen, who bought massive tract of land in 1668, and for a time acted as "governor, member of the Colonial Assembly, a Justice for Bergen County, a Captain and Major in the militia, and Commander of the "Bergen Rangers" or train bands."

[3] John Edsall is the son of Samuel Edsall by his first wife, Jannetje Wessels. Sarah Smith b. England, came to NJ in 1670s. Source: Cornelius Burnham Harvey, Genealogical History of Hudson and Bergen Counties (New York, 1900), 100

[4] Major William Sandford is the son of Captain William Sandford by his second marriage to Sarah Whartman.

[5] Samuel Moore is the son of Samuel and Naomi Moore and stepson of Samuel Edsall.

[1] Deborah Laurens, was a native of New Town, Long Island. She was a daughter of Major Thomas Laurens (Lawrence).
[2] The records of the Dutch Church, or at least a published transcript of those records, show the marriage of Michael Smit, y.m., born Hackensack, and Malli Smit, y.d., born Long Island, living at Zykakis (Secaucus), married 12 November 1741. 26 September 1741 may have been the date of "intention to marry" and was published or a license applied for. Various writers ascribe Maria Smith as a possible descendant of Abel Smith of Secaucus but have presented no proof of that assertion.
