[1] For more than 30 years, George Dewhurst was employed as Gamekeeper* at Raygill House, Township of Stonebeck Down, Nidderdale, close to the village of Ramsgill, Yorkshire, England. A plot of land on the farm was named after him, and is still referred to as the “Dewhurst Allotments. The present owner of Raygill House is Richard Harker.

*A gamekeeper is a” person who looks after an area of countryside to make sure there is enough game for hunting and or fish for angling. Typically, the gamekeeper is employed by a landowner to prevent poaching on his lands, control unwelcome predators, and monitor the health of the wildlife.”

[2] Information Source: Death certificate, which shows a Stephen Dean “present at death”. Stephen Dean was George Dewhurst’s son-in-law, being married to Mary Dewhurst of Raygill House, Yorkshire.

[3] Marriage information source is Boyd's Marriage Index, 1538-1840. Sarah Dean, born 1780; christened 27 August, 1780 at Parish of Gisburn, Yorkshire, died 7 December, 1862 at New Bridge, Fountains Earth, County of York, buried at Ramsgill Church 10 December, 1862; daughter of John Dean and Tabitha Coor.

[4] Marriage certificate lists Francis’ occupation as ironstone miner. NOTE: “Verity” was misspelled as “Beryty” on some documents, which is why it was spelled that way on Robert Allen Ingram’s charts. Death was from asthma.

[5] Mary is listed as a witness to the marriage of Francis, along with a Moses Rayner.

[1] Became naturalized U.S. citizen in Athens County, Ohio on 29 September, 1863.

[2] Marriage license shows name of Elizabeth’s father as Thomas Verity, agricultural laborer - other documents, in error, suggest the surname was "Berity." Elizabeth Verity was b. 1 April, 1816 at Stonebeck Up, Yorkshire, England; d. April 6, 1885 Nelsonville, Athens County, Ohio, USA– Buried with her husband and daughter Mary at Fort Street Cemetery, Nelsonville, Ohio. Thomas Verity was born in 1786 and married Elizabeth, born 1786, died 19 February, 1842 (Middlesmoor burial book). The 1841 census shows them residing at Bouthwaite in the Township of Fountains Earth, Yorkshire with their children William Verity, born 1812 at Heathen Carr; Harriet Verity, born 1821; Jane Verity, born 1827 and Maria Verity, born 1838 who was their granddaughter, born out of wedlock to daughter Elizabeth Verity and baptized at Middlesmoor on 19 August, 1838 (per Records Office of Northallerton, Yorkshire) – “daughter of Elizabeth Verity single of Bouthwaite”.

[3] Silas W. Bland was born in 1842 in Ohio; died 28 February, 1900 in Nelsonville, Ohio. Both he and Sarah are buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Ohio. They had four children: William Bland, born 1867, died 1946; George Bland, born 1869, died 1953; John P. Bland, a physician, born 1875 and Blaine James Bland, born 1884, died 1949.

[4] Ebenezer LaFollette was born 18 August, 1848 in Ohio. Died 20 January, 1899 in Hudson, Lenawee, Michigan; son of Isaac LaFolette, Virginia. Ebenezer and Elizabeth LaFolette had 10 children: George Theodore LaFollette, born 1871; Lewis Arthur LaFollette, born 1874; Isaac LaFollette, born 1876; Silas LaFollette, born 1878; Iola LaFollette, born 1880; Addie Belle LaFollette, born 1882; Grover Cleveland LaFollette, born 1884; Maggie May LaFollette, born 1886, Blanche Delle LaFollette, born 1892 and Erma Delle LaFollette, born 1892.

[5] Mary died from consumption at the age of 26 and is buried next to her parents at Fort Street Cemetery, Nelsonville, Ohio. Mary and Peter Donnley had three children, Alice, Albert and Ellen Donnley. The 1880 Census for Elk, Vinton, Ohio shows that Alice (then 7) was living with Elizabeth and Ebenezer LaFollette (her aunt and uncle), and Albert (then 9) and his sister Ellen (then 5) were living with their grandparents, John Francis and Elizabeth Dewhurst of Nelsonville. On 9 December, 1889 in Paulding County, Ohio, Alice Donnley (born in Nebraska) married Columbus McCool, canal boat worker, born March 1864, son of Wright and Maria McCool of Allen County, Ohio. They had four children: Ella McCool, born abt. 1890; Francis V. McCool, born abt. 1891; Grover McCool, born 4 March, 1893, died 11 August, 1977 and Arthur D. McCool, born 14 June, 1896, died 9 February, 1988.

[6] Mariah Knox is mentioned in Francis Dewhurst’s last will and testament as his stepdaughter. Mariah Knox’ death certificate, shows mother was Elizabeth Verity and father Frank Dewhurst; however, we now know (from baptismal record at Records Office of Northallerton, Yorkshire) that Mariah was born out of wedlock to Elizabeth Verity before she married Francis Dewhurst and immigrated to the United States with the rest of the family. Mariah and Frank Knox had ten children together: Thomas Watson Knox, born 11 September, 1859; Elizabeth Knox, born 17 February, 1861; Margaret J. Knox, born 8 August, 1863; Robert N. Knox, Jr., born 21 October, 1866; George H. Knox, born 22 October, 1868; Isabella Knox, born 20 November, 1870; Mary Annie Knox, born 18 November, 1872; Carl Franklin Knox, born 2 August, 1876; Frances Knox, born 2 August, 1876 and Sarah Knox, born 10 February, 1879.
