[1] James Dewhirst born c. 1804 in Whitley Lower or Thornhill, depending on which census looked at. Father was Richard. There is a Richard mentioned numerous times in nearby Horbury, but I can’t prove that he’s James’ father. James was a weaver on Lees Moor in the 1830s, but as the domestic weaving trade slumped he became a colliery labourer on the wharf at the local Ingham’s Pit by the 1850s.

[2] Ann born c. 1804 in Thornhill, died between 1845 and 1855.

[3] Eliza the daughter of John Halstead, a farm labourer of Thornhill. She was born c. 1818 in either Flockton or Middlestown.

[4] Silas was a miner. In 1881 he was living at Mount, Gomersal. Children: Harriett c. 1875; David c. 1877; Elina c. 1880.

[5] Francis was a miner in 1851. In 1881 he’s an engine driver at Normanton. Children: George H. c. 1861; Mary E. c.1865; Frederick W. c.1867; Sarah A. c.1870

[6] Allen was a miner in 1851. In 1881 he’s moved to Rotherham and is an engine tenter. As three of the sons, all miners, left Thornhill between 1851 and 1881, I suspect at least one of the local pits had closed.

[7] George was a coalminer’s hurrier in 1851. In 188, he was a colliery engineman living in Dewsbury.

[8] William was a colliery labourer in 1871. Lodging with brothers James in 1871 and Silas in 1881.

[1] James was a colliery labourer in 1871, a cloth fuller in 1881, a nightwatchman in 1893. At time of their Golden Wedding in 1916, 9 of 10 children were still living.
