FROM PAT: I have found a christening of Abraham Dewhurst in 29.12 1778 with a father called Isaac in Heptonstall (this is only a few miles from Keighley across the moor) he had brothers Jacob c. 1777 and William c 1781. Could he be the husband of Grace? If they married in 1801 it would be in the right timescale, Abrahan would be age 23.

FROM PAT: Found marriage of William and Grace 1816 (which Wm. which Grace? JMB)

Then looked in 1841 and found them at Croft Stone in Stansfield, William was age 50 a School master, Grace was 40, with children Mary 20, James 15, Jane 14, and Betty 10. Then in 1851 at 152 Vale Houses Stansield there is William age 28 a school master with wife Sarah age 29 and brother in law Joseph Firth age 12. next door at 152 Vale Houses Stansfield is James age 27 a teacher of languages and mathmatics, with his sisters Marion age 31 and Jane age 25 assistant school teacher and Betty age 21 also teacher assistant. So both sons went into teaching. No sign of William and and Grace in 1851

Looked at BMD and found 3 deaths of a William Dewhirst at Todmordon in 1842 and 1849 and one of Grace in Todmorden in 1848.

FROM PAT: Have looked at the Keighley Dewhirsts below, I dont think the dates for Abraham would fit with the marriage in 1801 as he would be too young.

I have found the following at Bingley

All with father John (could be more than one)no mother named
Sarah b 1781
Thomas b 1784
Abraham b 1786
John b 1788
Dinah b 1791
Mitchell b 1795
Abel b 1811 (?)

Abraham would have been 15/16 at marriage, but they did marry as young as 12. Bingley is next door to Keighley also the other names are carried on in Dinah's family.

I think this group could be more likley.

There was also another Bingley group with father Abraham, no mother named.

Further food for thought from Robyn:

Hi Barbara and Steve,

Steve I know I have been in contact with you before - Hello again. Don't think I have had contact with you though Barbara. I have also looked at this family for someone else a few years ago. It is looking rather likely that my Isacc Dewhurst who lived at Keighley during the 1730s +/- had at least 1 brother - named Abraham who married Mary Oxnard 1733. We also have a William Dewhurst marriage to a Mary Shackleton 1725 and a Rebecca Dewhurst marriage in 1710 to a John Moorhouse. According to the IGI all these marriages took place at Saxton in Elmet - way the other side of Leeds. Why Saxton ????? There are no Dewhurst Christenings at Saxton during that time frame we need !!!!

My Isaac's rather likely marriage was to Susanna - possibly Shackleton in 1727, also at Saxton BUT the apparent same Isaac / Susanna marriage (a very unusual name combination) seems to be in the Keighley registers - same date etc. I haven't checked the other marriages. Rather appears as if we have four Dewhurst sibling marriages though (or maybe cousins). Isaac, Abraham and Rebecca are Biblical names - which often flow through given families and also William as a name occurs regularly in subsequent generations of my family!!! Too unusual to disregard at this stage - I believe.

One extra side note is we have a number of Biblical names in the Dewhurst families of Heptonstall in the 1600s - Do I / we stem that line????

Barbara
To me, it seems, your Abraham Dewhurst is probably the the son (or just possibly a G/son) of Abraham and Dewhurst and Dinah Mitchel - married Bingley 1760 - chn Chr to them appear to be
John 1761,
Abraham 1763
Thomas 1763
Hannah 1766

The likely clue to follow is the very uncommon name of Dinah plus the area we are looking at is the roughly the same locality.
Chn Chr to Abraham and Grace (Johnson) Dewhurst. He is likely to be the son of Abraham and Dinah - Chr in 1763
Easter - 1802
Sarah - 1804
DINAH - 1805 Chr as Dewhurst but married John Rotheram as Dewhirst!
Betty - 1807
Mary - 1810
This of course would need to be checked in parish registers as the IGI can lead one astray if not checked out properly. Because of the possible link of my family, to this one I am especially keen to find any wills or paper trails of any kind to sort them out one way or the other.

Please feel free to contact me cable@iinet.net.au
best wishes to all,
Robyn in OZ

FROM BARBARA:

As per IGI --ABRAHAM Dewhirst of Keighley married 1.9.1801 to JOHNSON Grace of Skipton in Craven in Skipton.
Their children; Easter 13.10.1802, Sarah 1.4.1804, DINAH 11.12.1805 chr. 2.3.1806, Betty chr 15.11.1807, Mary 22.4.1810, There seems a few big gaps in between ages but according to census' these are the only children.

DINAH DEWHIRST b 11.12.1805 Keighley, (from above)
gave birth to a son ABRAHAM DEWHIRST on 14.6.1828, we dont exactly know who Abrahams father is, but a few months after Abrahams birth Dinah married John Rothera of Ovenden, he maybe the father, but was at that time married to Dinah Hansen, she died and he straightaway married Dinah Dewhirst. Dinah and John Rothera then went on to have Joseph 1831, Thomas 1832, Aaron 1834 Cain 1836 James 1838, Abel Ackroyd 1841 William 1843 John 1848 Dinah 1850. (All surnames Rothera Dewhirst)

ABRAHAM ROTHERA DEWHIRST b 14.6.1828 (Dinahs son) he married Elizabeth ?? of Halifax Their children were JAMES ROTHERA DEWHIRST b1856, Sam C 1855, Harry 1859, Annie 1862.

JAMES ROTHERA DEWHIRST b 1856 Halifax married Charlotte Mary Hockings of Birmingham, Their children JAMES ROTHERA DEWHIRST b 1878 B'ham and William b 1879 (mentally handicapped), born in Halifax.

JAMES ROTHERA DEWHIRST b 1878 Birmingham married Nellie Louise Roberts of Birmingham, their children, Nora, Myra and Nancy (my mother)
This is where our Dewhirst strand ends as there were no males to carry on the name.

These are the facts that I have to date.

Now back to ABRAHAM & GRACE they married in 1801 so he would have to have been born between say 1760 and 1783.
Jana mentioned two Abrahams, one born 8.2.1737 son of Abraham but I think this one is too old, and Abraham son of Abraham and Sarah Robinson he was born 16.6.1793 so he would be too young.,
I have looked on the IGI and also spoken to Stephen Dewhirst who answered my names of interest enquiry, he apparently is looking for Abraham and Grace too, but he thinks that the family come from Bingley as none of the Keighley Dewhirst that we can find are the right age to marry in 1801.

The family of JOHN DEWHIRST of Bingley that Pat found sounds promising, although Abraham is only 15, but many of the family names are the same as ones carried on in future families.
But also Pats family from Heptonstall looks very probable too, when I follow that thru from Jacob 1710 and your William 1712 sons of William and Elizabeth everything flows nicely dates, names except they come from Heptonstall, but then as you say that is not far from Keighley of Bingley.

I was actually at LDS today trying to follow this family back but did'nt find anything outstanding other than what I already had.

I will email Stephen Dewhirst and ask if he has anything else that may help.
